1976: It All Began in Saint-Donat

Our story begins with Alain Ayotte and his brother-in-law, Daniel Gilbert, who took over the business from Mr. Léandre Choquette. Together, they founded Centre de pompe à l’eau, a small business specializing in pump sales and repairs. Daniel left shortly afterward, and Alain continued the venture on his own.

Back then, no one watched the clock. A routine repair, including labor and travel, cost just $9.85, as shown on a July 1976 invoice we still treasure today. That commitment to straightforward, dedicated service helped build lasting relationships with the region’s first customers.

With the support of key partners such as the MacDonald family (MacDonald & fils Ltée) and plenty of ingenuity, the business grew. Renamed Centre de pompe St-Donat, the company went from selling five pumps a year to installing more than 150 annually. A pioneer in adopting new technologies in Quebec, Alain always believed in giving young people opportunities and trusting his team, a value that remains part of our DNA today.

The Second Generation Takes Over

In the 1990s, the family business welcomed a new generation. Alexandre Ayotte joined his father in 1991, followed by Frédéric in 1994. Both brothers pursued specialized education: Mechanical Engineering Technology followed by Water Treatment for Alexandre, and Robotics followed by Accounting for Frédéric. It was during his college years that Alexandre met Joël Renaud, a close collaborator who would go on to play a key role in the company’s development.

In 2004, Alexandre, Frédéric, and Joël became shareholders alongside Alain and launched H2O Technologies in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts. The company’s services expanded to include drinking water treatment, wastewater systems, wells, and pumps.

2008: Groupe H2O Is Born

In 2008, Centre de pompe St-Donat and H2O Technologies joined forces under one name: Groupe H2O. That same year, the company received a Bronze Mention at the National Bank SME Awards, a meaningful recognition of the entire team’s hard work.

The following years brought continued growth:

• 2015: Moved into new facilities in Saint-Donat;
• 2017: Acquired Le Saux Plomberie in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts;
• 2018: After more than 40 years of service, Alain Ayotte retired. He remains a highly valued advisor to the team.

Refocusing on What We Do Best

In 2022, Groupe H2O refocused on its core areas of expertise: water treatment, pumping systems, and wells. Frédéric continued commercial plumbing operations in Montreal through Plomberie H2O Mtl, while Alexandre and Joël took the lead at Groupe H2O.

In 2024, a new branch opened on Saint-Jovite Street in Mont-Tremblant. This brought us closer to the residents and cottage owners who have relied on us for decades, with the same goal we’ve had since 1976: providing personalized, local service from start to finish.

At Groupe H2O, we install artesian wells as well as water intake systems from lakes, rivers, and streams throughout the Laurentians and Lanaudière. Every property has its own characteristics, which is why we assess the project as a whole before recommending a solution.

It is also important to clarify one point: technically, an artesian well is itself a water intake system because it draws groundwater. In this article, we use the term “water intake” specifically to refer to drawing surface water from a lake, river, or stream.

Artesian well vs. water intake: two very different approaches

Imagine a cottage surrounded by forest near Tremblant. The lake is only a few dozen yards away, but the property can also accommodate drilling equipment. At first glance, both solutions may seem possible.

The main difference lies in where the water comes from and in the equipment required to deliver it to the home.

An artesian well draws water from deep underground

An artesian well draws groundwater from the bedrock. In the Laurentians and Lanaudière areas where we work, wells are generally between 30 and 150 meters deep, or approximately 100 to 500 feet.

A submersible pump is then installed in the well to carry the water to the home and its pressure tank.

This solution involves several factors to consider:

• the water comes from underground rather than from an exposed surface source;
• the required depth varies from one property to another;
• water quality must be tested after drilling;
• a water treatment system may be required depending on test results;
• site access conditions directly affect how the work can be completed.

Deep groundwater is generally less exposed to microorganisms originating directly from the surface. However, this does not mean that it is automatically safe to drink. It may naturally contain various minerals or metals, which is why water testing is important.

A water intake uses a lake, river, or stream

For a property located on a lake or near a waterway, a surface water intake can be another option.

A submersible pump draws the water and carries it to the home through a pipe connected to a pressure tank.

At Groupe H2O, a lake water intake intended to supply a residence is always followed by a water treatment system. Depending on the characteristics of the water, different solutions may be used, including filtration, chlorination, activated carbon, or UV disinfection.

Your property may make the decision for you

In the Laurentians, two properties located only a few miles apart can present completely different challenges.

A flat, easily accessible lot will not require the same preparation as a cottage built on a slope, surrounded by trees, or accessible only by a narrow road.

Before choosing between an artesian well and a water intake, several questions should be considered:

• Can drilling equipment reach the planned location?
• Will a temporary access road need to be built?
• How far is the water source from the home?
• Where is the septic system located?
• Is there a suitable lake, river, or stream nearby?
• What pumping and treatment equipment will be required?

A Groupe H2O project completed in Val-David clearly illustrates the importance of site access. The well location was behind the residence, and there was no side access for the drilling equipment. A pathway therefore had to be created beneath a carport so that a tracked drilling rig could reach the drilling area.

In this specific case, the water obtained after drilling did not require the addition of a water treatment system.

In Saint-Donat, near Lac Blanc, another project also required a tracked drilling rig suited to the terrain. The completed well reached approximately 240 feet deep.

These examples show why a realistic estimate cannot be based solely on property size or the apparent proximity of a lake.

How much does an artesian well really cost?

The price depends mainly on drilling depth, site access, and the work required around the drilling area.

For reference, at Groupe H2O, the median well completed in 2025 was approximately 400 feet deep, and the median price for the well and pump was approximately $25,000.

Additional work or equipment may be required depending on the project, including:

• well sealing;
• supervision of the sealing process;
• the use of specialized equipment;
• hydrofracturing when required;
• excavation and connection to the residence;
• a treatment system if required by the water analysis.

A shallower well with easy access may therefore cost less than a project requiring several additional interventions.

How much does a lake water intake cost?

For a lake water intake, Groupe H2O currently lists an indicative budget of approximately $11,500 plus taxes for the pumping system.

Water treatment must be added to this amount.

As a general indication:

• approximately $3,150 plus taxes to treat clear water;
• approximately $8,395 plus taxes when yellow water requires a more advanced treatment solution.

These amounts are estimates. Water characteristics, pipe length, property configuration, and the work required can all affect the final cost.

The right comparison therefore is not simply between the price of drilling a well and the price of placing a pump in a lake. The entire installation must be considered, all the way to usable water at the tap.

Regulatory requirements are part of the project

Installing a well or another type of water withdrawal system must comply with Quebec regulations as well as applicable municipal requirements.

Before work begins, a permit application must generally be submitted to the municipality concerned.

For a well, certain minimum distances must also be respected in relation to septic systems. Quebec regulations notably require a minimum distance of 15 meters from a watertight system and generally 30 meters from a non-watertight system, with certain exceptions when a well is sealed in accordance with regulatory requirements.

These constraints can directly affect where the well can be installed.

Case 1: the property provides easy access for drilling

If the drilling rig can reach the property, regulatory distances can be respected, and drilling is feasible, an artesian well is an option worth serious consideration.

Case 2: drilling is particularly difficult

If the property is very difficult to access, installation constraints are significant, or a suitable lake is located directly nearby, a surface water intake may be another option to consider.

Case 3: the property is used year-round

For a primary residence, the entire system must also be considered: water availability, pumping, pressure, treatment, and maintenance.

The decision should therefore be based on the overall reliability of the installation rather than on initial cost alone.

Artesian well or water intake: how do you make the right choice?

Before choosing, we recommend comparing five factors:

1. Property access for the drilling rig and other equipment.
2. The available water source, whether groundwater or surface water.
3. Regulatory requirements, particularly those related to the septic system.
4. Water quality and any treatment that may be required.
5. The total project cost, not just the main piece of equipment.

When should you replace a water heater in Quebec?

There is no single age at which every water heater must automatically be replaced.

CAA-Quebec indicates that a water heater generally has a lifespan of 10 to 15 years, depending on the manufacturer. The organization also notes that insurers often impose their own criteria and generally require replacement after 10 or 12 years.

The first thing to do is therefore very simple: check the age of your unit.

The rating plate attached to the tank usually shows its manufacturing date. If your water heater is approaching the limit recommended by its manufacturer or the limit specified in your home insurance policy, it is best to get informed before a problem occurs.

A water heater can still produce hot water even when it is approaching the end of its useful life.

Why should home insurance factor into your decision?

The apparent condition of the water heater is not the only consideration.

CAA-Quebec notes that insurance coverage may be affected when a water heater exceeds the maximum age accepted under the policy. Since requirements vary from one insurer to another, it is important to check the specific terms of your home insurance policy.

In other words, do not rely solely on a rule you may have heard from someone else. Check the year your unit was manufactured, then review the requirements that actually apply to your property.

The organization also indicates that scale can build up more quickly when the water is hard or comes from a well.

This does not mean that hard water will automatically shorten the lifespan of your water heater. Several factors determine the actual condition of the unit.

However, it is useful to understand the characteristics of the water flowing through your home, especially when the property is supplied by a private well.

What should you check if you have hard water?

When water contains a high concentration of hardness-causing minerals, it is useful to consider the entire water system.

Some factors to look at include:

• the actual hardness level of the water;
• the presence of scale deposits;

Replacing a water heater: take the opportunity to choose the right capacity

Replacement is also a good opportunity to make sure the tank capacity still matches your needs.

A home that once had one or two occupants may now house a family. Conversely, your needs may have decreased. The number of showers taken one after another, baths and the simultaneous use of certain appliances all affect how much hot water you need.

CAA-Quebec recommends choosing capacity primarily based on the number of occupants and their hot water usage habits.

A water heater that is too small may regularly run out of hot water. An unnecessarily large tank, on the other hand, can result in greater standby heat loss.

Replacing a water heater should therefore not automatically mean buying the exact same capacity as the old unit. It is better to reassess your household’s current needs.

The Régie du bâtiment du Québec specifies that replacing a storage water heater in an existing building must comply with the provisions of Section 2.6.1.7 of Chapter III, Plumbing, of the Construction Code. Requirements include provisions related to the discharge piping for the temperature and pressure relief valve.

So it is not only about choosing a new tank: the installation itself must also be done properly.

For an electric water heater, CAA-Quebec also notes that the electrical connection must be performed by a certified electrician.

• the water source;
• the system’s flow rate;
• the number of occupants;
• the number of bathrooms;
• daily water consumption;
• periods of peak demand;
• the space available for installation.

A large Tremblant home that welcomes several guests on weekends does not have the same needs as a St-Donat residence occupied by two people. The system must be able to meet actual demand without being unnecessarily oversized.

A Water Softener to Remove Calcium and Magnesium

A water softener is a commonly used solution for treating hard water and scale. It operates using an ion-exchange resin.

Maintenance also includes adding the salt required to regenerate the resin. The frequency varies according to the water hardness, consumption, and system programming. For systems offered by Groupe H2O, salt generally needs to be added every two or three months.

What Should You Know About Scale-Control Treatments?

A scale-control treatment is not always the same as a water softener. Some technologies are mainly designed to alter the behavior of minerals in order to reduce their ability to adhere to surfaces, without necessarily removing calcium and magnesium from the water.

This distinction is important.

A scale-control treatment may be suitable when the objective is to reduce deposits. A water softener, on the other hand, removes the minerals responsible for hardness through ion exchange.

The choice therefore depends on the desired result:

• reduce visible deposits;
• obtain genuinely softened water;
• protect a water heater;
• improve soap performance;
• retain certain minerals;
• reduce equipment maintenance.

A technology should not be selected based solely on advertising or price. Its capabilities must match the measured water parameters and the needs of the home.

What Sets a Premium Water Treatment Solution Apart?
